How to make the perfect Indian Chai Tea

5/5 - (4 votes)

I am an avid tea drinker and love trying different concoctions. This authentic Indian chai tea recipe is one of my go-to tea options.  It’s like a warm hug on a cold day, and even in the middle of summer, I drink it all the time 😊 The ginger and spices in this tea make it a very aromatic and yummy treat.

What you will need to make 1 cup of Indian chai tea:

  • Put about a cup of water into a saucepan on the stove on high setting
  • Toss in a tea bag (black tea preferable. I use Tetley orange pekoe)
  • Put 1 cardamom pod, 3 cloves and a small scoop of fennel seeds into a mortar & pestle and pound it. Add immediately to water
  • Grate approx. an inch of ginger into the water
  • Once water boils, add milk. I add a lot as I like my tea milky
  • I usually remove the tea bag about a minute after adding in the milk. You can leave it in longer depending on how strong you like your tea
  • Let the milk and water continue to boil. As it almost boils over, stir it (before it pours out of the saucepan). Do this again (let it rise), stir then remove from heat
  • Use a strainer to get only the liquids into the cup and pour tea into a mug. Add sugar to your liking. Enjoy!
